I owned an electrolux canister ultra quiet vacuum for the past 5 years which had served me well and finally died as soon as I used the second to last bag, lol. I was looking for a similar vacuum but a different one because the electrolux was poorly made with plastic pieces that broke within a month or two causing the handle to twist around while vacuuming (really annoying but it was such a good worker that I dealt with that for years). So that said after researching a couple days here on amazon I decided on this one.
First off, this vacuum does what it’s supposed to do which is vacuum very well. I have 4 dogs which shed like crazy all year long (FL), fortunately my house has tile and some laminate flooring. It picks up everything without pushing it around (sometimes I do have to tilt the floor part a bit to get bigger or slicker (pony beads etc) vacuumed up). It is also very quiet which is what I was looking for as to not freak out my dogs and not be completely deaf after using it. I will make a list of the pros and cons of this vacuum IMHO:
Pros:
1) It picks up everything it’s supposed to pick up. I have not tried it on carpet since I don’t have any, but it does a good job vacuuming several door mats I have.
2) It’s reasonably quiet (not as quiet as the electrolux but definitely not loud by any means.
3) It has a very long cord (but no auto wind)
4) It is a good looking little dude, cheery yellow with a happy face (which you do not have to put on, it’s a separate part) and it’s small so easy to store.
Cons:
1) You have to manually put the cord on top of the vacuum, you can’t just push a button to auto rewind it. The reason is I think that it has a very long cord which trumps the manual rewind issue. It’s nice not to have to plug and unplug it continuously.
2) It doesn’t maneuver really good, it gets stuck on it’s on cord and furniture and walls, most likely because it’s totally round and not oval. It would have been better to have 4 swivel wheels on this shape vacuum than the steady back wheels. I have to say that’s my biggest pet peeve with this guy.
3) The handle and metal hose part do not “click”. You have to really shove them into eachother which does not make them “not twist” (which was the one thing on the electrolux that I hated). They do stay together well but once they twist a little it’s a hassle to take them apart and redo them straight. Also I’m not sure how well they will continue to stay “tight” for the next couple years (I hope for $200)
4) The attachments do NOT stay on while you vacuum, I just take them off because I don’t use them but if you do you will get annoyed (now I don’t remember ever owning a vacuum where the attachments “on board” where not a hassle so…)
5) no airhole at the end of the flexible part so when you use it without the metal handle it suctions itself stuck on everything. Really annoying.
So everything taken into consideration, I do like this little guy, he’s compact, does his job quietly and is handsome. The long cord justifies you having to manually wind it onto his head, but the flexibility and attachments are nothing to brag about and the main reason why I deducted a star. I will see how long James will hold up with the dog hair and decide then if he is worth it to purchase again.

As a male, and, unused to hoovering,I Found this A great vacuum cleaner,to move around, and, the lighter weight to carry than other models, it is a real asset, much the same features as the HENRY,realy pleased with this one.

The wand connections are either too loose and falls apart, or is too tight and difficult to take apart quickly. During our first test, on the second stroke on a carpet, the wand separated. The tapers in the steel pipes are improperly shaped. What’s needed is a snap approach, not a force-fit.
To solve the problem, I had to very forcefully push the pipes together. But now, which you want to change to one pipe instead of two, or take both pipes off, it requires so much force my wife can’t do it.
We immediately decided to return it as defective. It took several minutes of extreme force to separate the two pipes to put them in the box.
Then today I discovered we are being changed a restocking fee of $154.06 !!! This is nowhere mentioned on the Amazon product page. Since the item is defective, this is a rip off.
We purchased this for $308.12 on September 28, 2023. Today I notice the price has been raised to $379.00. I wonder if this is because they are now getting so many returns they have to charge more.
As an alternative, we went with a Miele Complete Hardfloor Bagged Canister Vacuum Cleaner, C2 Hard Floor, Tech Blue for $499.00. It is much better: Snap wands. Adjustable length wand. Quieter. Six motor speeds. Spring return cord instead of manually wrapping up the cord around the top. A light comes on when the bag is full. The three attachments snap into a compartment in the vac, by simply opening the compartment lid. The vac stands up and the floor attachment slides into a slot on the vac side, for a well-designed storage system. Overall, it’s a dream to use. By comparison, the James is a stone age contraption whose only good point is its cute face and name.

It let me clean up the house easily, and powerful, good shape. Strong recommendation

The 400 pound tank from Sears has been banished to the basement.
Some have complained about loose hose connections–the connections are very different than we are used to and require an extra bit interposed (which comes with the vacuum) and they work fine. As other reviewers have noted the head works best on the pull back rather than the stroke forward and seems to be designed to. Very light and quite.

Excellent machine. Quiet, great suction and value. We use this in a construction company’s office and so far it’s been up to the task. Other machines simply haven’t been able to handle the job.

I have enjoyed using James vacuum for 8 years already. The suction is so strong that you need to open the air valve in order not to pull a heavy area rug with you, and it is lightweight (this is another reason why it’s great for senior people like my Mom). This is the best vacuum I owned in my life and I bought two of them for our family, the first was Yellow, and the second came Blue, I like Yellow much more, and I wish Numatic didn’t discontinue Yellow. Besides color, I also dislike the heavy floor nozzle, which I still durable, and the plastic end of the vacuum hose, which has cracked for no obvious reason. The best thing I like about Numatic is it filters the dust due to a very well-constructed HEPA filtration system.

THIS VACUUM LOOKS CUTE BUT THAT ABOUT SUMS IT UP…
FOR THOSE THAT SAY IT HAS GREAT SUCTION… WELL ON FLOOR POSSIBLY…
CARPET NOT SOOOOO MUCH…
TAKES LONG TO CLEAN AND DOESNT EVEN LOOK LIKE IT WAS VACUUMED…
MOST FRUSTRATING THING EVER!!!

James is a very “useful vacuum” (if you get the Thomas the Train reference)
Pros:
Light, powerful, quiet, top quality materials, simple to use from operating, to cord management, to replacing the bags.
Cons:
none so far
Summary:
We have carpet, rugs, tile, and hardwood. I was hesitant James would work for our deep carpets because he doesn’t have a power/roller head. However, the suction is so powerful that it doesn’t require a roller head. This is one of James’ best features, you’ll never have to clean a nasty roller wheel covered in hair and it won’t ever get jammed by bits accumulating. For all the $1000 high end vacuums out there, James is a better, more durable, easier to use vacuum. We have had Miele, Kirby, and commercial Hoovers and James tops them all.
