It works well we have vinyl planks as floors so it works well it goes up rugs no problem. Sometimes it will finish the upstairs in one go but sometimes it starts and it has to go back to the charging base and charge up to finish the job. But it will restart all by itself until the job is done. I would say it picks up 90% of the stuff could be more could be less but roughly in the that range I would say. It takes a few times to figure out your floor plan. But I really like this roomba you can put it on when you leave the house and come home and its vacuum is really nice. I was a little nervous the first few time just because I didn’t want it falling down the stairs but that’s not an issue. Also we have hard floors so I’m not sure how it would do on carpet, I would think the same job just use up the battery more. I would definitely buy this especially on sale it definitely worth it. I would definitely buy another when on sale, it saves you time and and does a good job. Also with the app you can put zones where you don’t want it to vacuum it pretty cool how it maps out your house and it shows you a map where it clean after its done. Also it works with alexa if you want to control it that way.

We upgraded from a still functioning, nearly 20 year old Roomba to the i6+ and the difference is astounding.
Pros:
1. This unit maps every inch of our floor perfectly and literally misses NOTHING. Our floors are always so clean you can mop right after and find not even a crumb. The AI is unreal! Watching it “think” is mesmerizing.
2. The fact it returns to charge and clean its bin (and works with Google Home voice commands) is so great.
Cons:
1. The disposable bags are 9$ each with tax, only available thru Roomba, and with our dog they fill up easily once a week. The unit only came with 1 bag too. This just feels wrong, like a total rip off. There is no reason they couldn’t have designed a removable/reusable bin other than to rip you off for vacuum bags for the next 20 years.
2. While this unit is flawless on floors, it doesn’t pick up our dogs long hair off the carpet. Basically it just clumps it up everywhere leaving balls on the rug. Ironically our old pet hair Roomba was far better at this. I think the difference is the new Roomba has rubber brushes which work flawlessly on floors, but about 20% as well on rugs. Hopefully they start making bristle brushes or something to fix this issue soon.
3. Even though the unit auto empties the bin, it will not get all the long pet hair off the brushes, side spinning brush or front spinner wheel. You’ll need to quickly clean these areas every time so you don’t prematurely wear out the Roomba. On the plus side this takes less than 30 seconds and is FAR better than cleaning past Roomba versions which often took me 5-10 mins to do.
Bottom line: if you have floors, this Roomba will clean your house better than you can imagine. Expect to replace a vacuum bag often and at excessive cost. If you have rugs with pet hair, this isn’t a great purchase.

The robot vacuum post that you didn’t know you needed! TL;DR
Roborock E4 {$179-$269}
Roomba i6+ {$549-$799}
If you’re looking to get a robot vacuum, I would like to say DO IT. As to which brand to pick, it’s a toss up, and completely depends on your budget.
I bought our Roborock on sale for $179 last year and have been very pleased with it. My heart was originally set on the more pricey Roomba self-emptying units, but since I am frugal and wanted to see if it would even work here, I went with the lesser expensive bot. We have a house full of old furniture and rooms so I didn’t know if a robot would even jive here.
I have been VERY pleased with our Roborock. It has done a great job over the last few months while we are not home. I would say, realistically, 8 out of 10 times it went off without a hitch. It went down our foyer stairs one time and had also gotten itself lodged under my sewing machine and other furniture a handful of times.
Every day that it did its cycle (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9am) I would come home and empty the trap. It has a washable filter and I cut the hair from the brushes and cleaned the sensors. It has been well worth the $179 to not have to see cat hair, hay, gravel, stove dust, and leaves everywhere.
A week ago I bought the unit I had had my heart set on. Well, the unit a tier above the one I had had my heart set on. The lowest priced Roomba unit with the self emptying dock has been at about $500 for the last year, the i3+. The next level up, the i6+, has run about $799. Last week, and even now, Amazon has had the i6+ for the same price as the i3+. My assumption is that a new i6+ is probably coming out soon so they’re blowing them out. WHICH IS FINE, I want one.
I don’t spend a lot of money on goofy things, except 1978 El Caminos, so I decided to spoil myself with this i6+. To be honest they were similar in price LOL. I’m an adult with adult money, no kids, and a farmy kind of property with a dusty wood stove so I did it.
After purging, donating, selling, and burning almost everything I owned in the fall, having a clean house feels absolutely amazing. Having a clean floor 24/7 is almost euphoric. I enjoy being home and no longer have those nagging feelings of dread about things I need to be cleaning. I also very much enjoy the kitty cats and Chris and I have raging allergies so I need something to clean up the hair.
My feelings so far on the two:
Quality of the clean:
Roomba and Roborock seem to clean the same. I was very pleased with both. The Roborock generally took a little more than an hour and would get down to about 30% battery life. It was also slower than the Roomba. The Roomba is a faster unit, almost a bit more violent, and takes about 3 hours to complete the first floor. It does seem to be more thorough and charges itself halfway through a first floor cycle.
Apps:
I didn’t want to get another brand so I’d have a second app, but I went with the Roomba anyway. The Roomba has a far superior app. And by far I mean, from here to Australia. The Roborock app is great and easy to use, but very primitive. You also cannot choose certain areas to clean with the E4. It cleans everything or nothing. The Roomba i6 created a map of our house and will just do certain areas that I tell it to. It can do certain rooms on different days of the week or on command. Both tell you when to perform regular maintenance on the machines, when they are stuck, or if software updates are needed.
Parts:
I like that the Roborock company and Roomba BOTH offer replacement parts at affordable prices. I have been able to take apart and clean out the Roborock really easily. I won’t have to do anything to the Roomba for a while, but I will have new brushes, filters, etc. on hand for when it is due.
Clumsiness:
The Roomba is definitely a superior machine, but it should be, at 3x the price of the Roborock. The Roborock is very primitive but very gentle. Like I said, only 1 time out of dozens of cleanings did it go down some stairs. And it was probably my fault for not cleaning the sensors. The Roomba is much, much faster and almost more violent, sometimes bashing pretty hard into my furniture and woodwork. I think after a few cleanings, it will figure itself out and no longer hit so hard. The Roborock is definitely a more simple, slower, and more methodical machine. Roomba goes in curvier lines and seems to have a method to the madness. Roborock says eff this madness, I need to go in a straight line or I’ll die.
Convenience:
Both are great in that they are vacuums that I don’t have to push around. We have so much wood floor, furniture, and trim – it is super cool to not have sheh just pushed up against it. I also cook a lot so the crumb thing was driving me bonkers. I do have to manually empty the trap on the Roborock, but it’s not bad at all. A few seconds and I’m done. The filter is also washable, so it lasts a long time. The Roomba has the base that sucks the dirt out of the machine and into a disposable bag. 1. The base sounds like a god dang jet taking off when it gets the dirt out of the vacuum. 2. I haven’t quite gauged how long it will take to fill the bag. Now I’ll have to purchase bags from time to time. I’m not sure how I feel about it. But having to not have to remember to empty the little bastard is convenient since I have it running 3 days per week.
Sounds:
Both are god dang vacuums. They sound like vacuums. Run it while you aren’t home. I hate seeing people complaining about the noise in online reviews. IT’S A effING ROBOT VACUUM, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?
Physical differences:
They are approximately the same size and weight. Both are black and have cameras and sensors in approximately the same areas. Major differences are that the brush on the Roborock is 1 actual bristled brush, while the Roomba has 2 rubber “brushes” that work simultaneously to pull dirt between them, instead of sweeping dirt up into a bin like the Roborock. Both seem to function very similarly, but I’d have to give the blue ribbon to the Roomba.
I want to point out that the other reason I went with the Roomba was that the higher quality Roborocks [$500-$800] only come with vacuum AND mop features, and I did NOT want a mop feature. They also do not come with a self-emptying dock. I personally don’t see how you can jam a mop system and a vacuum system in a bot the same size and not compromise the vacuum capabilities. I also read a lot of reviews that the mop part is just a glorified restaurant pre-packaged moist toilette and having it drag that around my entire first floor seemed kind of gross. It’s just us and the cats, I will mop when I need to.

Impulse purchase on Prime day, a few hours later I was second guessing it given that I didn’t really ‘need’ a Roomba….Congrats to Amazon on their logistics department though, they had the package shipped before I could cancel and it arrived at my door less than 24 hours later. Bezos and his team of psychologists figured out if you get someone the item fast enough they’ll be less likely to cancel/return it!
Now about the Roomba…..first off, I purchased another Roomba at Costco years ago…maybe 8? It was expensive at the time ~$500 and it worked well for the first few months, before it had a hardware issue that required sending back for a new one. Replacement unit never worked properly either so it gathered dust – as in dust on the Roomba, not in it!
So…the new unit is an i6+ with the self-emptying base, initial impressions – its awesome.
The new Roomba is substantially improved over the ancient model I owned, a few of the most obvious upgrades:
1) No more random vacuum patterns like that ancient model I had, this one actually vacuums in neat rows, one ‘room’ at a time.
2) Phone application is great and the mapping is fantastic (just an FYI – it takes a few days for the Roomba to gather enough data to create the map, which is why that didn’t show up for a few days). I did figure out that running the Roomba on a map only run finished building the map immediately.
3) New roller/bristle design appears to be far less likely to get hair wrapped up in it like the old bristles, hopefully this means less maintenance.
4) Roomba returns to its base, recharges (auto empties bin) and restarts where it last left off as many times as necessary to finish the job.
5) Once your house is mapped its great to be able to set a schedule and only clean the rooms you want the Roomba to clean (i.e. ignore the bathrooms and my kids bedrooms since all are likely to have clothes, junk, etc. on the floor that will interfere with the Roomba.
6) Excellent sensors, we had a sunken room with no railing and 2 large open floor sections, the old rooma required light stations to keep the roomba from crashing, this roomba has no trouble avoiding the drops.
A few negatives –
1) This thing is LOUD. You definitely won’t have this running at night, it is much louder than the old model I had,
2) Burns through the battery quickly, seems to have to recharge pretty often
3) Cost – expensive, even with the Amazon Prime Day ‘special’.
We’ll see how durable this new model is, hopefully it lasts substantially longer than the older Roombas. If so, I’ll remain happy with my impulse buy.
UPDATE – a few comments. I continue to be more impressed and happy with my purchase. A few reviews on here mention they didn’t have bags or replacement edge brushes included, If so that was obviously a packing error, mine came with 2 bags and an extra edge brush. I would suggest double checking all the box packaging to ensure you didn’t miss them (I know stating the obvious). Also someone said this isn’t as good as the I7, I read the i6+ is the exact same model as the i7, only sold under a different number for Amazon, aside from the color they are the exact same hardware… The smart mapping just takes a few days for the Roomba to gather enough data to show the map, also I discovered the off-limits feature which let’s you add squares to your map which Roomba will avoid – ie we have a small rug near the backdoor where everyone leaves their shoes, the Roomba sucked up a shoe string yesterday, I added a small off limit area where the rug is and now the Roomba avoids it, and the shoe laces!

This robotic vacuum was everything I hoped for.
After reading countless reviews and searching the Internet, I figured I’d give it a try and I’m glad that I did. Here are a few of my initial thoughts that I hope will help you when deciding whether or not to buy this product.
PROS:
Despite some negativity about this product’s noise level, I found it to be quieter in comparison to my Bissell; unless it was emptying on the dirt disposal base, otherwise it wasn’t nearly as loud as your traditional vacuum.
In terms of suction power (also compared to my Bissell), the Roomba has just as good of a suction, if not better. The i6+ was able to pick up anything from dust, to dirt, to cat hair (we have three cats). I was especially impressed when it cleaned the baseboards and in between our railing banisters with its side brush.
Another feature I liked was the “charge and resume” software. From my experience, it takes about one and a half hours to get a full charge then the robot does roughly an hour and a half of work before needing some more power. I placed the i6+ on the upper level of our house, which measures about 800 feet, and it was able to get that area clean on one charge.
A final feature that I find convenient is the app. I like that I can schedule cleanings and see information about how long the robot cleaned, where, etc…
*** NOTE: I READ IN THE MANUAL THAT A MAP LAYOUT IS GENERATED AFTER ABOUT 3-5 USES.*** (This is accurate in my experience thus far)
(At first I didn’t notice this mapping feature in my app settings and became worried, but after further investigation I now understand why. The robot needs to learn the area/floor plan a few times before it can generate a map. After two “learning runs,” my Roomba was able to identify its surroundings and I can now name rooms, place clean zones, and set keep out zones within the app.
CONS:
There is no question in my mind that this was a great investment; however, the price was a bit hefty. If you’re able to purchase this on sale like I did, it’s worth every penny.
I would’ve also liked to see a bit more extras in the box, but overall I feel like this vacuum was still good value and I will get a lot of use out of it.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Look for this product when it’s on sale. It’s worth a pretty penny but it’s features are excellent and it gets the job done in a reasonable time. I purchased this because I have a very busy schedule. So I see this being ideal for those with busy lifestyles, and those who own pets.

This Roomba vacuum cleaner performs better than our other two lidar based vacuums. It navigates quite well and meticulously cleans our floors. For the navigation it does require some light. The self cleaning feature was the selling point for me and it is worth it! If I forgot to clear out the boxes daily on my other vacs, they would not perform as well and effectively would waste their vacuuming runs.
The Roomba has performed flawlessly over the past three weeks. It has found its base each and every time. It has picked up the hair from two dogs and a cat. I divided the daily runs (last two map images) into two as the battery life is one weak point and having it recharge to continue, we found to be annoying. In the morning it does the run where we tend not to be in and in the afternoon, the other portion of the house. It has been working out well with no interruptions to empty or recharge.
Our living area consists of all hard floors and has a lot of furniture and obstacles for the vacuums. Having said this, the layout was robot proofed for the prior robot vacuum cleaners so it did make it easier to implement the Roomba. After completely charging the robot, I did a single mapping run with all rooms well lit. That, surprisingly, worked out perfectly. Our vacuumable area out of 1700 square feet of technical floor space is around 1000 square feet.
I check and clean the bag, brushes (if necessary) and filter once a week.
Pros:
Excellent at cleaning and picking up fur (one dog is a husky that sheds a lot)
Self cleaning bin is very effective.
Good navigation in light
Good cleaning pattern
Much less maintenance than other robots without the self-emptying bin
Rotating brushes work very well with no tangles to date.
Better than my Lidar at actually cleaning.
Dirt sensing ability and repeats cleaning in those areas where it detects more dirt.
Good mapping.
Minor Cons:
Shorter battery life than other Lidar based robots.
Needs light to navigate effectively.
Lidar vacuums are more precise in their coverage and navigation.
Major cons:
None yet.
I have been impressed enough to consider having another one in the future for our lower level. I had carefully researched for weeks before purchasing this I6+ (which is the same as the I7+ and I8+ except for extras). While I prefer Lidar based robots normally, this one seemed to be the best self-emptying robot available. I purchased this while it was on sale before Christmas.
