   I’m a clean freak and I have 4 dogs. I guarantee those are two statements one doesn’t read in the same sentence everyday, but here we are. We purchased a home a few years back that has a large, carpeted formal living room and is nearly entirely carpeted on the second floor. The carpet is relatively new and neutral in color, so I wasn’t ready to spend a fortune getting rid of it and replacing it with vinyl or hardwood. I’ve been using a traditional household carpet cleaning machine for years, but it was not doing the trick. It would get clogged with dog hair no matter how much I vacuumed beforehand and the pet odor was still present in every carpeted room in our house. I decided to splurge on this commercial cleaner, the Bissell Big Green, as a last ditch effort to get rid of pet odor and staining. After cleaning every floor, here is my list of pros and cons:

   Pros:
   1.) DOES THE JOB! I am amazed by how well this machine works. It gets 5 stars from me immediately because one is actually able to see a drastic difference before cleaning and after cleaning. In some rooms/areas of our home, our carpet appeared to be a tan color. After using the Big Green, it is evident that the color is actually beige. It gets rid of most staining (pretreating for larger or older stains is worth the extra prep work!) and carpets will look and smell clean again.
   2.) Works well on area rugs! I have thin, washable area rugs that do not fit into a residential washer and dryer. It does a wonderful job cleaning them. Be sure to bring them into the garage for cleaning so that your hardwood, vinyl, or laminate will not get water damage.
   3.) Holds a ton of water! I was filling up our old carpet cleaning machine 3x for our bedroom alone. This will get 2 average-sized bedrooms done with one tank. It is much more efficient and saves time dumping and filling tanks.
   4.) Sucks up pet hair. This is a huge one for me, because I was having to clean the suction head of our old cleaner after cleaning every carpeted room because pet hair was getting lodged in it and blocking water from being vacuumed up. The water suction component is wide enough to suck up most pet hair. Be sure to vacuum with a traditional vacuum prior to cleaning, because it may not be able to suck up large mats of hair.
   5.) Pays for itself over time. Renting machines or having professionals come out could get extremely pricey. We had professionals out at our last home, which was much smaller and less carpeted, and paid over $500 for cleaning services that were mediocre at best. Renting machines can add up in costs and one cannot be 100% certain that they are receiving a clean, working machine. The results from this machine are well worth the money spent to purchase it upfront.

   Cons:
   1.) This machine is bulky and heavy. It could be difficult to maneuver in a tight hallway or around the perimeter of a room. My solution for cleaning the perimeter of the room is to use the attachment device. This is the sole issue that I have with this machine.

   Overall, this machine is wonderful! Some tips that I can include to prospective buyers/new owners are to make sure you take your time cleaning each room. Each pass, forward and backward, should be almost questionably slow. Be sure to use Bissell brand cleaning solution. One mistake I made with our previous device was using solution that was not formulated for the device I was using. Lastly, be sure to properly care for the device. When cleaning is complete, rinse out all of the tanks and let dry completely before returning them to the device.

   Sure, it’s loud, it’s bulky, it’s annoying to have to stop and empty the bucket of nasty water/refill the clean water, it’s kind of a pain in the butt to get up and down the stairs. And yet, this carpet cleaner works SO much better than the cheap ones you can buy at Target/Walmart!
   I got tired of renting Rug Doctors and getting charged way too much because I kept it two or three hours past my return time and decided it was much more economical to buy my own (and less of a hassle). I initially planned on getting the rug doctor but decided to do a little research and ended up buying this one because it was about $100 cheaper and as far as I could tell they were really similar in function and results.
   I ended up being much happier with the Bissell when comparing both brands.
   Bissell vs. Rug Doctor:
   1. The Bissell fits under the outer rim of my pool table (standard 9’ table), which the rug doctor did not. Believe it or not, this makes a huge difference in a room with a pool table!
   2. The Bissell is easier to deal with the water containers – both the clean and the dirty buckets.
   3. The attachment is easier to attach to the Bissell than the RD (granted, neither machine makes this task hard).
   4. As loud as the Bissell is, it still seems a lot quieter than the RD. The rug doctor did a weird rumble when releasing the solution that made the entire room feel like it was vibrating – It felt like a loud bass on the first floor when the RD was being used upstairs!
   5. Bissell will clean going both forward and backward. RD will not. This seems like a no-brainer, tbh.
   6. This last one is a bit subjective, but it seems to me that the Bissell simply does a better job overall and gets the carpet cleaner than the RD.
   7. Bissell feels lighter (I don’t remember the actual weight of either machine).

   Honestly the only advantage I can think of for the rug doctor would be a slightly larger water/waste tanks, meaning you have to refill and dump the tanks less often. However, I somehow seem to get more area cleaned with the Bissell amount of water than I did with RD. At the very least, I would say they are near even as far as area coverage per tank water refill.
   In conclusion, both products are far superior to the other options (non-commercial) on the market, but this one is the best of the two.

   TLDR: The Bissell is cheaper and (imo) works better in many ways than it’s main Rival, Rug Doctor. I highly recommend this product.

   *Pro Tip: DON’T pour your dirty waste water out into your bathtub! Especially if you live with pets. If you do dump it in the tub, you’ll be digging out the clumps of mystery hair gunk that stopped up your drain with a coat hanger shortly afterwards.*

   I bought this machine out of pure frustration. I love the lightweight ease of the Bissell, easy use and two way clean. I use the Bissell Big Green Carpet Machine in a 8 bedroom house living with a large family 2 dogs included. This shampooer cleaned with ease on extra dirty carpets where using other professional carpet cleaners had failed Removed family and dog stains with ease and left my carpets looking brand new. Love it Love it Love it, worth every cent 🙂 🙂 🙂

   Excellent cleaner. Does a good job. I have 4 dogs and my carpets get very dirty at this time of the year . I have had numerous cleaners and the’ Big Green’ is the best cleaner I have had. It is not too heavy either . Very easy to fill and empty and clean. Had a couple of little problems initially but they were sorted out immediately. Very happy with the level of customer care.

   So far have only used Big Green to clean upholstery with the included attachment. Took out an amazing amount of dirt and stubborn stains. Incredibly easy to use and to clean out machine after using. Gave 4 stars only because haven’t tried on rugs yet. If it cleans them like the upholstery I’ll change my rating. Suction appears to be really good for removing water after cleaning. It is a heavy machine, but rolls easily enough. Nice long cord to plug in.
   ADDITIONAL review……used on wool rugs with bissell professional deep cleaning product….awesome results. Did not pretreat, left rugs clean and soft, no overpowering perfume smell. Did not use the oxy pretreat because not safe for wool. There were fibres in the dirty water, so if you have an old antique uber expensive oriental you may be best to be cautious.
   The other plus…after cleaning the rugs, the back of the rug was not wet. So the machines suction power must be darn good. I was a bit worried about cleaning the carpet in our rv because I had concern the rug may be left too wet and might mould. I will go ahead now with that rug.
   Overall, the big green is an easy to use, easy to clean, and effective product in my opinion. Happy with this purchase.
