This unit is lightweight and can easily get under and around tables, chairs, etc. The chamber that holds vacuumed dirt isn’t huge, but emptying it is a breeze. Big bonus: it’s cordless! I vacuum every day or two (I have a long haired cat), but what used to be a chore is almost enjoyable now. And yes, this unit easily “handles” cat hair.

I use this in my house on hard wood floors. It does a great job especially in tight areas. If you have a lot of floor space. The vacuum head may be a bit small for main areas. It works great for me. Minimal walkways and mant tight areas. Plenty of suction for this type of vacuum.

Perfect little vacuum for small spills, cracks and crevices, and for vehicles as well as the house. Suction was better than expected and with the cyclonic adapter and canister addon it extends filter life. So far vacuumed for about 45 minutes straight testing battery life (4.0ah 18v Makita branded battery, not a knockoff) and only used 50% of battery load. It really is a nice tool, well made, and the cordless feature makes it very usable in all areas inside and outside the home.

A very good product serving its purpose very well. One thing… explanation about the charger pictogram is not very clear.

First off, you should NOT buy this vacuum if:
You don’t own any other Makita power tools.
You expect this to be your main vacuum.
You need this to clean thick carpet.
Also I HIGHLY recommend getting the “199553-5 Cyclonic Vacuum Attachment” with it, so much so that IMO it should come with it and be part of the kit.
I paid ~$120 (on sale) for the quick charger, 2 AH battery, and vacuum and at most would pay $150 for that kit. At ~$120, I do think it’s a great deal as the battery and quick charger alone are easily worth ~$90, so getting the vacuum for ~$30 is great. However, this is also why I say you need to have other Makita power tools, because if you have no use for the charger or battery outside of this vacuum it’s a terrible deal.
I use this vacuum to clean my car and garage, and for these tasks it’s fantastic. It’s super light and with the added filter is the perfect length for me to clean the floor (I’m 6’3”) and I use it all the time to clean up random stuff like metal chippings from drilling to dirt tracked in from outside. It can clean short carpet (stuff like entry mats) very well. However, it does not clean thick carpet well as the suction isn’t super strong (at least compared to my Shark vacuum).
As I mentioned earlier, I think you essentially HAVE to buy the extra filter as it allows you to use the vacuum without needing to change the main filter and it also seems to improve the suction of the vacuum as well. The added filter essentially acts as the “bag” of the vacuum and makes it much easier to dump out the collected dirt and “protects” the main filter significantly. So much so that I still haven’t had to replace it despite using it frequently and owning it for almost a year.
Again I do NOT suggest this as your main/only vacuum as it’s just not up to that task, but as a second/portable vacuum this is a GREAT vacuum.

bought this vacum 2 years ago works good! not for thick or shag carpet great for hard wood tile or any hard suface works good on tight weave carpet perfect for me i dont have any shag style carpet, just wanted to add my review after reading others reviews. this vacum is great for quick clean ups before moping and maintenance! not for deep cleaning on carpets you really need somthing that has a motor driven roller brush for that. the plastic tank does crack and break as i saw on others reviews mine has some cracks. when i saw the cracks i odrered a spare tank for $15.00 havent used it yet but i have it just in case. very easy to use and light wieght beats having to plug in a cord and roll it up you spill you can vacum it up and put the vacum away in a minute or 2 very nice

I love tools powered by rechargeable batteries and have loved my grass trimmer, blower and power drill. So when I saw this vacuum cleaner and decent reviews AND reasonable price, I went for it and now I have two!! My home has never been so clean. If you have time to do the whole house, you can, but often, just a couple of rooms is all you have time for. It makes vacuuming quick, easy and so convenient. It’s plenty powerful and the reach of the nozzle is fantastic. Easy to get under beds and sofas and tight corners. Cleaning the filter is a cinch. I bought a larger battery just as a back up but I have never really lost the charge. This is so great that I thought my daughter might find it useful for her suite at college. She’s never been a neatnik but it’s so light, convenient and quick and easy that she and one of her roommates sent me a cute picture of them with the vacuum cleaner. Too bad she won’t let me post it!!
10/29/18 – a bit disappointed with the cracking of the blue/neck part which connects the rod. The very few poor reviews seem to experience the same problem. Some recommend a hose clamp and report great success. What style and size etc.? I tried duct tape and it works ok but the nozzle gets lose. It should be stronger with perhaps a latch to secure it while it has the hose/rod attachment. I am probably too aggressive with it and I am certainly vacuuming more than I ever did. It is still a GREAT little vacuum. It just needs to physically last for longer than a few months. But the design and the power and the convenience so far can’t be beat. The physical body needs to stand up to the rest of it.
